Crete Wine Tasting & Benefit, 9/14 5-7pm
Wednesday Sept 14th
5pm - Walk Up Tasting
6pm-7pm Seated Session, with Iliana visiting us virtually
You may have heard about the The Melampes Wildfire Disaster on Crete, an ancient island in the middle of the Mediterranean.
Winemaker Iliana Malihin (a protege of Arianna Occhipinti) was instrumental in reviving the old pre-phylloxera vineyards of her region, and laying a course for a new era of Crete wine. This was important, because in the 1980s, Phylloxera destroyed most of the vines on Crete, and much of the island has been replanted from the material in the ravines around Melampes. Iliana works extensively with those precious museum vines of Melampes, but a few weeks ago, 90% of the museum vineyards on Crete were destroyed by wildfire, including 100% of Iliana's old-vine vineyards.
The wine world has rallied the last several weeks, putting on a series of fundraisers for her to start the long process of replanting. At this special tasting, we will have a 1 hour walk-up tasting, followed by a seated learning session when Iliana will Zoom in and talk to us from Crete.
The entire ticket price plus a portion of proceeds of the days sales will go directly to Iliana to rebuild her business.
Join us for an incredible evening celebrating these special Mediterranean wines!
